Cribbed from a blog I just discovered: http://global-culture.org/blog/

I think Pico Iyer best described why it is we travel.

“We travel, initially, to lose ourselves; and we travel, next, to find ourselves. We travel to open our hearts and eyes and learn more about the world than our newspapers will accommodate. We travel to bring what little we can, in our ignorance and knowledge, to those parts of the globe whose riches are differently dispersed. And we travel, in essence, to become young fools again — to slow time down and get taken in, and fall in love once more.”

when i went on a semester at sea, I thought at the outset that I should collect t-shirts from every country i visited. Instead i collected phone numbers and addresses, memories and photographs. I think I have 1 t-shirt and I hardly ever wear it, but it was 2 days ago that I read through something a friend had written on the trip, and laughed.

Travel for me is accelerated living. One day on the road is full of a week's worth of memories. Also, I love coming back home. Travel helps me see things through a different perspective and appreciate life more.
